Liverpool complete £36m signing of Ibrahima Konate from RB Leipzig

Liverpool have completed the signing of Ibrahima Konate for £36m.

The defender had been linked with an RB Leipzig exit and the Reds have now won the race for his signature.

Konate has penned a long-term contract at Anfield after they triggered his release clause and will bolsters Jurgen Klopp’s defensive options.

The season-long injury to Virgil van Dijk underlined Liverpool’s need to have more cover at the back.

Klopp has also had to deal with Joe Gomez and Joel Matip for long periods of the season.

Konate made his name in a upwardly mobile Leipzig side, who have also lost Dayot Upamecano following his decision to join Bayern Munich.

Konate played for Leipzig during their Champions League last 16 loss to Liverpool earlier in the season.

He told the club’s official website after joining: “I’m really happy to be joining such a massive club like Liverpool.

“It’s a really exciting moment for me and my family and I am really looking forward to meeting my new teammates, the staff and getting started on this new chapter.

“Right now, my focus is on the U21 European Championships with France, but after this competition I know I will be joining one of the best teams in the world and that gives me a great feeling.

“I have worked very hard for many years to get to this point, but I would like to say a big thank you to everyone at RB Leipzig and all the people I worked with there – the coaches, my teammates, the staff and especially the fans.
